1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how [legal name of owner/imprint] ("we," "us" or "our") collects, uses, shares and protects personal information when you visit knowtheline.net (the "Site"), sign up for our emails or contact us. The book Know the Line: A Practitioner's Guide to the Legal Landscape of Natural Health (the "Book") is not sold on the Site; it is sold through Amazon.

By using the Site, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with it, please do not use the Site. This Privacy Policy should be read together with our Terms of Use and our Disclaimer.

The Site is operated in the United States and is intended for visitors in the United States.

2. Definitions

In this Privacy Policy:

  • "Personal information" means information that identifies, relates to, or could reasonably be linked to a particular individual or household, such as a name, email address or IP address.
  • "Service providers" means companies that process personal information on our behalf to help us operate the Site and our business, under contracts that limit how they may use it.
  • "Cookies" means small data files placed on your device when you visit a website, and similar technologies such as pixels, web beacons and local storage.

3. Information we collect

Information you provide to us.

  • Email sign-up: your first name, email address, and the types of email you chose to receive.
  • Messages: your name, email address and anything you include when you contact us.

Information collected automatically. When you visit the Site, we and our service providers may automatically collect:

  • device and browser information, such as browser type, operating system and device type;
  • usage information, such as pages viewed, links clicked, the time and length of your visit, and the page that referred you to the Site;
  • your IP address and the approximate location derived from it (city or region, not your precise location);
  • whether you opened our emails or clicked links in them.

Information we do not collect. You can view and search the state tables without providing any personal information. We do not sell anything on the Site and do not collect payment or financial account information. We do not knowingly collect precise geolocation, government identification numbers or health information. Please do not send us health information about yourself or your clients.

4. How we collect information

We collect information directly from you when you fill in a form, sign up for email or contact us, and automatically through cookies and similar technologies when you use the Site.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies to:

  • make the Site work (for example, to keep forms functioning);
  • remember preferences;
  • measure whether our emails are opened and their links are used.

Your cookie choices. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies through their settings. If you block cookies, some parts of the Site, such as forms, may not work properly

Do Not Track. Some browsers send a "Do Not Track" signal. Because there is no common industry standard for responding to these signals, the Site does not currently respond to them.

6. How we use your information

We use personal information to:

  • send the opt-in emails about the author's other businesses;
  • respond to your questions and messages;
  • operate, maintain, secure and improve the Site;
  • detect and prevent fraud, abuse and security incidents;
  • keep records required for legal purposes;
  • comply with the law, enforce our Terms of Use, and protect our rights and the rights of others.

We do not use your personal information to make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.

7. Email communications

We send email only to people who have signed up for it. The sign-up form offers news about the author's other businesses.

Every marketing email includes a working unsubscribe link and our mailing address. You can unsubscribe at any time, and we will honor your request promptly.

8. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

We share personal information only:

  • with service providers that help us operate the Site and our business, such as our website and email platform SpingboardCRM and our email delivery service Kit;
  • with the author's other businesses opt-in to receive news from them, and only your name, and email address is collected;
  • for legal reasons, when we believe in good faith that disclosure is required by law, subpoena, court order or other legal process, or is necessary to protect the rights, property or safety of us, our users or others;
  • in a business transfer, if we are involved in a sale, merger, reorganization or transfer of assets, in which case personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Privacy Policy;
  • with your consent, or at your direction.

9. Links to other websites

The Site links to other websites, including government websites where laws are published and Amazon, where the Book is sold. Those sites have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for their practices. When you buy the Book through Amazon, Amazon collects and handles your purchase and payment information under its own privacy policy; we do not receive your payment details.

10. How long we keep information

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy:

  • email sign-up information, until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it;
  • messages you send us, for as long as needed to respond and keep a reasonable record;

11. How we protect information

We use reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards designed to protect personal information, including encrypted (HTTPS) connections and service providers that maintain their own security programs. No method of transmission over the internet or of electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we learn of a security breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

12. Your privacy choices and rights

Choices available to everyone. You may:

  • unsubscribe from our emails at any time, using the link in any email;
  • ask us what personal information we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct inaccurate information;
  • ask us to delete your personal information, subject to legal exceptions.

State privacy rights. Depending on where you live, state law may give you additional rights. Several states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Utah, Texas, Oregon and others, have enacted consumer privacy laws that may give residents the right to:

  • know or access the categories and specific pieces of personal information collected about them;
  • correct inaccurate personal information;
  • delete personal information;
  • obtain a copy of their personal information in a portable format;
  • opt out of the sale of personal information, the sharing of personal information for targeted advertising, and certain profiling;
  • not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.

Many of these laws apply only to businesses that meet certain size or data-volume thresholds. We will honor requests as required by applicable law.

California residents. California law requires us to disclose the categories of personal information we collect: identifiers (such as name, email address and IP address) and internet or other electronic network activity information (such as pages viewed). We collect this information for the purposes described in Section 6, and we disclose it to the categories of recipients described in Section 8. We do not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16. Under California's "Shine the Light" law, California residents may request information about any disclosure of personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing purposes. [Counsel to confirm whether the California Consumer Privacy Act applies and to adjust this section.]

Nevada residents. We do not sell covered information as defined under Nevada law. Nevada residents may submit a request to opt out of any future sale to [email address].

How to make a request. Email [email address] with the subject line "Privacy Request." We may need to verify your identity before responding, for example by confirming your email address. You may use an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf, and we may ask for proof of the agent's authority. We will respond within the time required by applicable law. If we deny your request, you may appeal by replying to our response with the subject line "Privacy Appeal."

13. Children's privacy

The Site is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected]">[email protected].

14. Visitors outside the United States

The Site is operated in the United States and addresses United States law only. If you access the Site from outside the United States, your information will be processed and stored in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country.

15. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the updated version on this page and change the "Last updated" date at the top. If we make material changes, we will provide additional notice, such as a notice on the Site or an email to subscribers. Your continued use of the Site after an update means you accept the updated policy.
